Stanford U. Receives $50-Million Gift for Concert Hall

A Stanford University alumnus and his wife, Peter and Helen Bing, have donated $50-million to build a concert hall that will be the centerpiece of a planned performing-arts center on the campus, the university announced on Friday. Design work on the hall is expected to begin immediately, and officials hope the hall can be completed by 2010, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Dr. Bing, a 1955 Stanford graduate, physician, and Southern California developer, also serves on Stanford’s Board of Trustees. He and his wife are longtime benefactors of Stanford whose gifts have included support for the university library and programs that helped revitalize undergraduate education, university officials said. “It would be difficult to find an area of the university that has not been touched by the philanthropy of Helen and Peter Bing,” Stanford’s president, John Hennessy, said in a written statement.

Details of the form of the gift were not disclosed.
