Southern U. Board Suspends President During Investigation of Board Chairman

The Southern University System’s president, Ralph Slaughter, was suspended with pay for two months on Saturday while the university continues an investigation of sexual-harassment charges against the chairman of the university system’s Board of Supervisors, Johnny G. Anderson. A lawyer for Mr. Anderson has contended that President Slaughter made the harassment complaints public in order to try to force Mr. Anderson out of office (The Chronicle, May 3).

According to The Advocate, a newspaper in Baton Rouge, La., the university’s Board of Supervisors ordered Mr. Slaughter to step down and to cooperate with the investigation. Mr. Anderson, who is a top aide to Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, has denied the harassment allegations. He recently agreed to step down temporarily to avoid giving the appearance of influencing the investigation. —Lawrence Biemiller
