Southern Oregon University will eliminate a German major, lay off five faculty members, and merge three schools into one, but will save three programs, in a budget-retrenchment plan that the president, Mary Cullinan, described as “a less painful approach than what we unveiled in January,” the Mail Tribune, a local newspaper, reported. Ms. Cullinan originally spoke in November of the need for sharp cutbacks to close a looming $4-million budget deficit that stemmed from falling enrollment, declining state support, and rising costs. Most of the cutbacks came out of academic programs.
