South Korean Colleges Expect Shortage of Applicants; African Scientists to Study Genetically Modified Food in United States

For the first time, South Korea's colleges and universities are expected to have more openings for freshmen than they have applicants. The change will occur in the 2003 academic year, which starts in February.

A record low number of prospective students, 675,759, have applied this fall to take the national examination required for college admission, according to the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation, the government agency that administers the test.
