South African Enrollments Unexpectedly Decline
Contrary to the expectations of university officials in South Africa, statistics released by the government last week show student rolls to be shrinking.
Total enrollment in South Africa's public higher-education institutions -- universities as well as technical institutes -- dropped from 605,000 students in 1998 to 564,000 this year, a 7-per-cent decline.
