Some Universities Increased Internal Spending on Research—but Still Fell Behind

Some colleges raised their internal spending on research by double or more during a decade-long period, which may have helped them win more federal research dollars. But because those federal dollars increased more slowly from 1999 to 2009 than they did at other institutions, these institutions' rank in federal dollars received in 2009 fell.
