Sociologist who refused to testify is released
A graduate student in sociology who had been held in Spokane County Jail since May for refusing to answer a grand jury's questions about his research was released last week.
Rik Scarce, a doctoral student at Washington State University and the author of Ecowarriors: Understanding the Radical Environmental Movement (Noble Press, 1990), was released by U.S. District Court Judge W. Fremming Nielsen. Mr. Scarce had spent 159 days in jail.
