So Much for Social Norms

Off and on during the past 30 years, a sociology professor at Mars Hill College issued a challenge to his students to prove the power of social norms: Disrobe in front of the class, he'd say, and you'll get an A for the course. No one at the North Carolina college had ever taken the dare.

Until last month.

Mars Hill won't identify the parties involved, but the college's president, Dan G. Lunsford, confirmed that a male student, upon hearing the challenge, doffed his clothing in
