Sniffing Them Out: A Scientist Studies Detector Dogs
A few days after the World Trade Center attack, a photograph appeared on the front page of The New York Times of a dusty, exhausted German shepherd lying in the street, its left paw bandaged, being cared for by a volunteer. The shepherd was one of dozens of search-and-rescue dogs brought in to comb the rubble for survivors.
The photograph was a vivid reminder of how intertwined these keen-nosed animals are with our lives -- in war, as well as in peace.
