Smithsonian Institution Press Slashes Spending as Break-Even Deadline Looms
BOOK BALANCING: Required to erase this year a deficit that last year approached $1-million or close up shop, the Smithsonian Institution Press has been taking drastic measures. They are meeting with extraordinary success, within the terms of the break-even mandate; Smithsonian researchers, however, are lamenting them as the latest erosion of the institution's mission.
Among the steps: decreasing scholarly publications from 80 percent to 20 percent of the press's output of about 70
