Smithsonian Announces Publishing Deal With Rowman & Littlefield
MUSEUM QUALITY: At the end of 1847, the Smithsonian Institution's founding secretary, Joseph Henry, drafted a set of guidelines for the fledgling organization's scholarly publications. Each scientific paper would be anonymously peer reviewed, he wrote, and no paper would be published "which does not furnish a positive addition to human knowledge, resting on original research, and all unverified speculations to be rejected." The institution would freely share copies of its papers with colleges
