Smaller Is Not Always Better

One of the received notions about undergraduate research is that the quality of the experience is better at small liberal-arts colleges than it is at larger research universities. At small col­­leges, the theory goes, undergraduates benefit from having more attention from faculty members since the students need not vie with graduate students and postdocs.

At the University of Pennsylvania, however, Phillip A. Benedetti's experience does not bear that out.
