Showdown Over Free Speech at Columbia U.

To the Editor:

I was very impressed that Columbia University invited Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak, despite the outrage expressed from so many quarters ("Speech Puts Bollinger Back in the Eye of a Storm," The Chronicle, October 5). I believed that the university was a forum where all ideas could be expressed, considered, and debated. Obviously I was wrong.

The president of Iran and I do not agree on much, but I do agree with him that the lack of courtesy shown
