Should a College and a City Share a Single Library?
Plan at San Jose State would save money, but professors fear they would get short shrift
The main library at San Jose State University greets visitors with a shadowy entrance flanked by unadorned concrete walls. Black-and-white signs point the way to a digital card catalogue and World-Wide Web access. Patrons, most in their 20s, gaze at computer screens or bend heads over books. It is quiet enough to hear a man's pants rustle as he walks to the elevator.
