Should Students Be Required to Own Laptops?

Academic freedom is a fragile and subtle thing. The idea of requiring a piece of expensive and short-lived (how long before the next necessary upgrade? Not four years, I bet) equipment in a particular configuration (laptop) from one of two competing camps (IBM clone or Mac) and, inevitably and eventually, with software requirements (can't use our system with Netscape, got to switch to Explorer) strikes me as wrongful interference, if not a marketing ploy ("Chapel Hill
