Should Scholars Give Up Tenure Early to Make Room for Junior Colleagues?
To the Editor:
I have to agree with the senior scholar who walked away from James Shapiro's rude question about whether the scholar had held his post too long (Point of View, April 14). While Shapiro makes an acceptable argument, he assumes that all tenured faculty members simply give up keeping up with new developments and trends in literary study, or whatever academic field they might be in.
I think in about 15 years you should invite him to revisit
