Should Elite Colleges Strive for Economic Diversity?

In "Toward Affirmative Action for Economic Diversity" (The Chronicle Review, March 19), Richard D. Kahlenberg asserts that "talented poor and working-class students represent America's untapped resource," but I submit that he is making much ado about nothing. True, students from nonaffluent families are underrepresented at the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities, but that doesn't mean that they can't go to college. ...
