Sexism and the Veil

It seems to me that Joan Wallach Scott misses the main reason why the French — and other citizens of the so-called first world — find the veil worn by Muslim women (and, for that matter, by ultra-Orthodox Jewish women) offensive and rightly limit its use in a variety of public contexts ("Veiled Politics," The Chronicle Review, November 23).
