Senior Swabbers

Some academics look forward to playing golf or sailing around the world after retiring. But an emeritus religion professor, L. Gordon Tait, empties wastebaskets, scrubs toilets, and wipes off "glass doors where kids have put their sticky fingers."

Mr. Tait is one of five professors retired from the College of Wooster, in Ohio, who are volunteering during their golden years as janitors at the Viola Startzman Free Clinic, named after the college physician who retired in 1979 after 23
