Senators Call for Limits on Recording Industry's Access to Names of Internet Users

Senators said at a hearing last month that the recording industry has too much leeway to obtain private information about Internet users when trying to catch people who are illegally downloading music.

Sen. Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican, has filed a bill, S 1621, to require anyone accusing someone of violating digital-copyright laws to file a lawsuit in court. Mr. Brownback presided over a hearing by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation to discuss the
