Senator Kennedy Seeks Better Protections for Human Research Subjects
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy said last week that Congress must pass legislation to improve protections for people who participate in clinical trials. Senator Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, is working on a measure that would require all institutions to be specially accredited in order to conduct research involving human subjects; university lobbyists would prefer a voluntary certification process.
Both Mr. Kennedy and Sen. Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican and a heart-transplant surgeon
