Senate Votes Down Estate-Tax Repeal
The U.S. House of Representatives this month passed legislation to permanently repeal the tax on large estates. But the measure, which some college fund raisers feared would have caused a drop in charitable giving, failed in the Senate.
House members approved the bill by a vote of 256 to 171. But under Senate rules, 60 votes were needed for passage, and supporters fell six votes short, on a vote of 54 to 44.
