Senate Passes Bill to Maintain Federal Spending Into March

The U.S. Senate passed a spending bill today that would provide a substantial boost for defense research in the 2009 fiscal year while financing student aid and research at current levels until March.

The bill, a continuing resolution, is identical to one passed on Wednesday by the U.S. House of Representatives. The measure cleared the Senate by a vote of 78 to 12. President Bush is expected to sign the bill, which would keep the government afloat until March 6. —Don Troop
