Senate Passes Bill Financing NIH, Pell
The U.S. Senate approved a spending bill for education and health research last month after turning down an amendment that would have raised the maximum Pell Grant by $200 in 2006, instead leaving it at the 2005 level.
The final version of the education bill would provide a maximum Pell award of $4,050, the same amount as the past three years. The measure also proposes increasing spending for the National Institutes of Health by more than $1-billion, or 3.7 percent, to $29.42-billion.
