Senate Panel Would Give Modest Budget Increases to Cultural Endowments

The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved a bill that would provide the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities with $5-million increases each in the 2008 fiscal year.

The bill, which now heads to a floor vote in the Senate, would give $133.4-million to the arts endowment and $146.3-million to the humanities endowment. While those amounts are higher than President Bush recommended, they are significantly lower than those approved by the House Appropriations Committee last month. That chamber’s bill would provide $160-million each for the endowments. —Kelly Field
