Senate Panel Calls for Flat Funds for Cultural Endowments in 2007

The National Endowments for the Arts and for the Humanities would receive no budget increases in the 2007 fiscal year, under a spending bill approved on Tuesday by a Senate Appropriations subcommittee. The bill, which will be considered on Thursday by the full committee, would provide $124-million for the arts endowment and $141-million for the humanities endowment. The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the bill in May, after adopting an amendment by Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, a Democrat from New York, that would provide an additional $5-million for each of the agencies (The Chronicle, May 18). The Senate bill follows President Bush’s request for no spending increases for the endowments in the 2007 fiscal year, which begins on October 1 (The Chronicle, February 7).
