Senate Panel Approves Increases for NIH and Pell Grants
By STEPHEN BURDThe Senate Appropriations Committee voted last week to provide the National Institutes of Health with a $3.7-billion increase in the 2003 fiscal year, $25-million more than President Bush had proposed. The panel's spending plan also would raise the maximum Pell Grant award by $100, to $4,100.
The bill was the product of close negotiations between Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human
