Senate Panel Approves Physical-Sciences Bill

Two Senate panels endorsed large increases in money for physical-sciences research in the 2008 fiscal year last week, following through on President Bush's appeals to pump more funds into that area.

An appropriations subcommittee dealing with science approved a spending bill to appropriate about $6.6-billion to the National Science Foundation, about 10 percent more than it is receiving during the current fiscal year. The subcommittee also moved to give the agency's education division
