Senate Democrats Push for Pell Increase

Leading Democrats in the U.S. Senate said in late March that they would push for a $300 increase in the maximum Pell Grant, to $4,610, in a blueprint covering the Education Department's 2008 budget.

At a news conference, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, who is chairman of the committee that oversees the department, said Democrats would also push for two measures that would help borrowers burdened by student-loan debt. One measure would cap student-loan repayments at 15 percent
