Before it recessed last week for a month, the U.S. Senate confirmed Diane A. Jones as the top higher-education official in the Education Department, the department announced today. Ms. Jones, the new assistant secretary for postsecondary education, has held two other jobs in the Bush administration, as well as legislative and lobbying posts. —Andrew Mytelka
