Almost 20 percent of students at two elite colleges have intentionally injured themselves, most often through cutting or burning, according to a study published today in the June issue of Pediatrics. The findings, which were based on an online mental-health survey completed by 2,875 students at Cornell and Princeton Universities, are representative of the challenges college health administrators face in dealing with mental illness among students. An abstract of the study, “Self-Injurious Behaviors in the College Population,” is available at the journal’s Web site.
