Members of Congress Recommend Federal Coordination of Science Education, But Skeptics Are Wary

Members of Congress said on Wednesday that the federal government should do more to coordinate the teaching of elementary- and secondary-school science and mathematics, which they said often lacks coherence and depth. But critics of such a move said federal intervention could undermine local control of education.

The issue is important to colleges because the variations in states' curricular and teacher standards have been blamed for the large number of high-school graduates
