Teacher Wins 'Build Your Own College' Contest

School's Curriculum Director Wins Build-Your-Own-College Contest 1

Peter Schmidt has been at Gill St. Bernard's School, in New Jersey, since 1976. "The good life," he wants students to know, includes an "awareness of the different forms of humanity that we encounter around the world."

As director of studies at Gill St. Bernard's School, in Gladstone, N.J., Peter Schmidt stays busy. But after Hurricane Sandy, with the school closed for several days, he devised a plan for a college that would emphasize experiential learning in eight-week blocks of study, giving students time to focus on individual subjects in a liberal-arts environment.
