Scholars' Reflections on the World After the Terrorist Attacks of September 11
To the Editor:
It's fine to pronounce broadly on the state of the nation, U.S. policy, Islam, terrorism, or U.S. misdeeds of the past ("Reflections on the Fractured Landscape," The Review, September 28). ... It's much harder to acknowledge the specific failures of the academy in our present predicament, and to work on remedies.
Building up departments of Middle Eastern and Islamic studies is one obvious step. ... But should knowledge of the Middle East be left to specialists
