Scholars' Involvement Outside Academe

To the Editor:

I agree with Paul Sabin and would extend his discussion ("Academe Subverts Young Scholars' Civic Orientation," The Review, February 8). ... Colleges and universities ought to make it much more clear than they typically do that professional service in the community outside the institution counts toward the service component of the promotion-and-tenure process (and post-tenure review).
