Fans and taxpayers are the real losers, they say
Back in the heyday of Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra, detractors said that rooting for the Yankees was like rooting for U.S. Steel. Nowadays, a more apt comparison might be Microsoft or Citibank.
Flush with high ticket revenues and lucrative television contracts, the Yankees can afford baseball's first $112-million payroll -- nearly nine times that of the hapless Minnesota Twins -- and still make a profit.
