Scholar Detects Phallocentrism in Dewey Decimal System; New Book by Pierre Bourdieu Details 'Symbolic Violence' of Gender Distinctions
GIFTED WOMEN AND MALE HOOKERS: Could the library catalog be the last refuge of patriarchy? So contends Hope A. Olson, an associate professor in the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta. In the latest issue of the journal Signs, Ms. Olson detects phallocentrism in Dewey's famous decimals. Nor is the Library of Congress system free from gender bias.
