Scholar Barred From U.S. Speaks at Georgetown U. Via Satellite

Tariq Ramadan may be barred from the United States by the federal government, but that exclusion did not prevent the Swiss scholar from being heard — via satellite — on Tuesday at Georgetown University, according to today’s Washington Post.

Mr. Ramadan, who now teaches at a British university, has been denied a U.S. visa since 2004, despite shifting explanations for the policy. A lawsuit has accused the federal government of barring Mr. Ramadan and other foreign scholars because the Bush administration disapproves of their political views.

On Tuesday at Georgetown, Mr. Ramadan spoke and answered questions for 90 minutes on, among other themes, his contention that Islam and democracy are compatible. He will appear again today and tomorrow. —Andrew Mytelka
