Senior Editor, The Profession
Sara Hebel directs The Chronicle's coverage of administrators, faculty, and graduate students as senior editor of the Profession section. The news articles she oversees include those involving leadership and governance, executive pay, the academic workplace and labor, teaching and curriculum, and faculty culture.
Hebel has worked as a reporter and editor at The Chronicle since 1999. She served as politics editor from 2007 to 2011, directing coverage of the Bush and Obama administrations, Congress, and state governments. As a reporter, from 1999 to 2007, she wrote about state and federal policy debates and public-university governance and finance. Before coming to The Chronicle, she covered Congress and national politics for Legi-Slate (1995-98), on online news service affiliated with the Washington Post Company.
Sara has won national awards for reporting from the Education Writers Association and has made frequent appearances on national panels and news programs to discuss higher-education policy and trends. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Northwestern University.
