San Diego State Pays $1.45-Million to Settle Title IX Lawsuit

San Diego State University will pay $1.45-million to its swimming coach, Deena Deardurff Schmidt, to settle a Title IX lawsuit, the latest in a string of sex-discrimination suits filed against colleges in the California State University system, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

Ms. Schmidt asserted that during her tenure, from 1994 to 2007, she received little administrative support and “unequal and inadequate” salary and access to facilities. Ms. Schmidt said the university’s decision to close its pool, in 2000, hindered her program, which was forced to practice off campus and, for the last five years, has finished last in the Mountain West Conference.

The coach was told in June 2007 by the athletics director, Jeff Schemmel, that her contract would not be renewed. The news came months after the opening of a new $12-million pool, a project Ms. Schmidt said she campaigned for.

Earlier this month, San Diego State’s assistant strength and conditioning coach, Courtney Bale, filed a similar suit against the system’s Board of Trustees. In other similar litigation, California State University at Fresno has settled five such lawsuits, including a $9-million settlement with a former women’s basketball coach, Stacy Johnson-Klein. The lawsuits have cost Fresno State around $16-million. —David DeBolt
