Same-Sex Unions in Retrospect

For all the uproar over gay marriage, little study has been made of how such unions actually work out. In Coming Out in Christianity: Religion, Identity, and Community (Indiana University Press), Melissa M. Wilcox, a visiting professor of religion at Whitman College, presents her ethnography of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender couples and other parishioners in two California congregations of the Metropolitan Community Church, which has performed same-sex "holy unions" for the 35 years
