Salmonella Hits Nearly 100 at U. of Western Ontario

Health authorities in London, Ontario, say that nearly 100 people have contracted salmonella at the University of Western Ontario, and five people have needed hospital treatment. Both the CBC and a local newspaper, The London Free Press, report 53 laboratory-confirmed cases and 44 other people with symptoms. The suspected sources of the outbreak are two food outlets in the University Community Centre’s food court.

The university shut down the food court over the weekend for a thorough cleaning and brought in outside food. It also said that tests on food handlers had come back negative. This morning, the university’s student newspaper, The Gazette, criticized the administration for failing to directly inform students and members of the faculty and staff about the outbreak. —Karen Birchard
