Sallie Mae and Politics

Stephen Burd's article on the loan industry and Rep. John A. Boehner was an unbalanced attempt to connect unrelated facts ("The Congressman and Sallie Mae," The Chronicle, January 27).

Sallie Mae's goal during the budget-reconciliation process was to lower the overall level of cuts to student loans. We joined with colleges and parent and student organizations from across the country to make the case that student loans should not be slashed when growing numbers of
