Sallie Mae Reaps Benefits From Ties to Key Agency
The company provides most of the staff for a loan guarantor that is supposed to be an independent monitor
As a result of Sallie Mae's highly publicized agreement last month with New York's attorney general, the nation's largest student lender has agreed to stop paying hundreds of dollars in travel costs to individual college administrators who recommended the company to their students.
Still largely untouched by regulators, however, are a variety of more sophisticated practices
