SUNY Chancellor Says He Will Resign at the End of May

The chancellor of the State University of New York announced last week that he would resign in three months, surprising the state's higher-education officials and putting leadership of the often-tumultuous system up for grabs.

The chancellor, Vice Adm. John R. Ryan, told the presidents of the system's 64 campuses in a letter that he would resign on May 31, not quite a year and a half after he was appointed to the post on a permanent basis after having served seven months as acting
