SAT Scores Rose and ACT Scores Held Steady in 2003

The average scores on both the verbal and mathematics portions of the SAT rose in 2003, while the national average composite score on the ACT, which tests English, reading, mathematics, and science, did not change, as each of the college-entrance examinations was taken by a record number of high-school students.

The average math SAT score increased 3 points, to 519 out of a possible 800, the highest in more than 35 years, and verbal scores also rose by 3 points, to 507 out of 800,
