S. Carolina's Ex-Chief Convicted of Fraud

James B. Holderman, who was president of the University of South Carolina from 1977 until he resigned in 1990, has been convicted on charges of visa fraud and money laundering that resulted from a federal sting operation.

His lawyer, Neal Nameroff, told the Associated Press that he planned to appeal the convictions. During his trial, in Miami, Mr. Holderman told the jury that he had never meant to commit any crimes, but that he had been desperate to pay for treatment for mental-health
