Rutgers U. Women's Basketball Player Drops Lawsuit Against Don Imus

Kia Vaughn, a women’s basketball player at Rutgers University who last month sued the notorious radio host Don Imus for slander, libel, and defamation, has withdrawn the lawsuit.

Her lawyer said she wanted to focus on academics and basketball, according to The Star-Ledger, a newspaper in Newark, N.J. “We feel that we have made a strong and important statement against such hateful speech with the filing of this lawsuit,” said the lawyer, Richard B. Ancowitz.

During a live broadcast in April, Mr. Imus referred to members of the highly ranked Rutgers basketball team as “nappy headed hos,” causing a furor that led to his firing by CBS Radio and MSNBC. Ms. Vaughn filed suit in August. She did not announce how much she was seeking in monetary damages, but had intended to set up a scholarship, The Star-Ledger reported. —Sara Lipka
