Rutgers U. Plans to Offer a Free Ride to Disadvantaged Eighth Graders

The president of Rutgers University, Richard L. McCormick, announced a new program last week that will give minority and low-income students in New Jersey a chance to attend one of the institution’s campuses free.

According to plans for the new Rutgers Future Scholars Program, school districts in Camden, Newark, New Brunswick, and Piscataway — where Rutgers’s campuses are located — will select top eighth graders each year who will receive invitations to campus events, as well as college-planning advice and test preparation. The students will also get a guarantee that they will not have to pay tuition and fees if they are admitted to Rutgers. —Eric Hoover
