Rules for Students on the Syllabus

To the Editor:

Paula Wasley's piece on the proliferation of regulations in course syllabi ("The Syllabus Becomes a Repository of Legalese," The Chronicle, March 14) notes that Henry Adams's 1870 syllabus "had no strictures on eating during class." No doubt Professor Adams's students would never have dreamed of bringing their lunch to class: They had too much reverence for the professor and their shared enterprise.

Some faculty members suggest that syllabi ought to list fewer
